The Power of “Liking”

Many people believe that to lose weight they have to do cardio and lift weights. Not true!

I teach strength training and cardiovascular training for a living and it absolutely can help with fast weight loss. But in my experience if you’re not doing something you enjoy (or truly enjoy the effects of), you will not succeed long-term. This can include any activity from walking, yoga, strength training, exercise classes, to biking, hiking, rock climbing, etc. Just find something you really like!

The same is true with healthy eating. I don’t believe in diets for long-term health or weight loss. Diet plans are a great tool for short-term rapid fat loss but unless your actual meals taste great and are healthy, the odds are you won’t succeed.

Walking is Awesome If…

Many people ask me if walking is any good. For individuals who are overweight, walking is awesome! For individuals who are skinny, “walking” has much less impact on the body.

Let me tell you why. Imagine you weigh 190 pounds like I do. Walking up the stairs is easy. But what if you added a 50-pound back pack and told me to walk to the store 5 blocks away and back. Could it be called a workout? Hell yeah.

Well, imagine someone who naturally weighs 240 pounds and is my height. What happens when they walk everywhere? They’re working out and probably working out hard if they go a lot of places. That’s why if one is overweight, it’s difficult to beat even “walking” as an exercise because it’s easy to do, but not “necessarily” easy to accomplish.
