That's where I come in to the picture. In order to reach your fitness goals I apply research driven methods of training that not only get results, but are also fun.

Most of my clients are normal people who just want to look and feel better—and keep it that way.

What should I expect when working with with you?

You should expect to have fun and feel in control of your health. Personal training does not have to be a grueling “boot camp” experience—it should be designed to fit into your schedule and get you immediate and long-term results.
“My clients don't suffer, they feel good after workouts—which is how you should feel.”
—Von Gillette, personal trainer

A little bit about my style of training:
  • I use positive reinforcement because I believe it gets better results.
  • Every program is personalized and progressive. I am never shy about tweaking or switching your program if you’re not getting the results you want.
  • You will steadily increase your strength, mobility, improve your posture, improve your appearance, drop fat, and gain muscle.
  • I use the best nutritional program in the world: Precision Nutrition, which is scientifically designed to improve your eating habits, skills, and help you reach your goals.
  • You will automatically get nutrition and exercise support throughout the week—not just at our sessions.
  • If you have any pain, we address it right away and make sure we do the right rehab exercises to help get you out of pain.
  • I'm available for email and text anytime.

Most importantly, my clients get results.

“I didn’t really know what to expect from a personal trainer. But within five minutes of meeting Von, I could tell he was the real deal. He listened to my goals and problems, and used a science-based approach to build my program. I’ve lost weight every week since I started.”
—Andre from Minneapolis

What is your process like as a personal trainer?

I believe in intelligent training. To me, that means we start by assessing your body’s current condition and any injuries or limitations you have, as well as your goals. Then we choose exercise and nutrition recommendations that are going to get you the best possible results.

The basic process I use follows four key steps:
  1. Assessment. At your Fitness Assessment, we’ll find out which muscles are supporting your overall health and which ones are holding you back. We’ll also identify any pain or soreness you have. I’ll be able to give you exercises right away that will help you improve those areas.
  2. Set goals. Together, we’ll determine what health goals are most important and why. Then we’ll make sure that all of your exercises, stretches and nutrition recommendations directly support you in reaching those goals.
  3. Workout. We can meet weekly or as often as you want. But most importantly, you will know EXACTLY what to do when you train on your own.
  4. Continuous results. You’ll see your body transform. Many of my clients see results in weeks, not months, and we’ll continually revise your program to make sure you don’t hit a “plateau” or slide back. You will feel better than you’ve felt in years.

This system addresses a lot more than just weight loss. Whether you have tightness, soreness, pain, or limited mobility, we will identify which muscles are involved and use exercise to change the way they work. These small changes lead to a night and day difference in how you look—and feel.

How do you know it works?

It works because it’s based on how the body actually moves and functions.

For example, I recently started working with a new client who was experiencing chronic lower back pain. She told me her mom had the same pain, and she believed it was hereditary—there was nothing she could do about it. But back problems are often related to how we use our muscles, and she agreed to come in for an assessment.

During our first session, we found out that two sets of muscles known as the glutes (the rear end) and obliques (part of your core muscles) were not active in her normal standing posture—likely because she had been working long hours sitting at a computer.

These happen to be the exact same muscles your body uses to support a healthy posture and avoid back problems. We had already found the cause of her pain!

To fix it, I didn’t give her a bunch of hard-to-follow posture recommendations. Instead, we developed a simple set of exercises to strengthen those muscles and get them activated. I asked her to do the exercises just three times a week.

The results?
  • Within one week, with almost no effort, the muscles were already stronger and more active
  • Within two weeks the pain was gone and her posture looked straight and confident!
  • She had already lost weight and slimmed her mid-section. She felt great.

She could see these results for herself in before-and-after pictures we had taken. She could also feel the results every day, waking up with no sore back. Once in a while, if she has a very long day at work, she can still feel a little soreness—but now she knows exactly what to do about it. One three-minute break and a simple exercise, and she feels great again.

“I can’t believe that I was actually able to overcome my back pain. The exercises were easy, and I felt good after I did them. Now I have no pain at all.”
—Jenn from St. Paul

How much does it cost to hire a personal trainer in the Twin Cities?

I believe personal training should be accessible to as many people as possible. Pricing is based on how many sessions you want per month, with discounts available for couples or small groups.

Many trainers will insist you have to meet twice a week, but I believe you should choose a schedule that works for you. Many of my clients come for weekly sessions, and other prefer bi-weekly. I’m able to support you even with these less frequent schedules because I’m always available by phone, text, or email (no extra charge) and we use web-based tools to give you automatic, daily accountability in between sessions.
